Life is about to hot up for one AutoCare garage – but it’s all in a very good cause
You can sit in a bath of baked beans for charity if you want. You can jump from a tall crane tied to an elastic rope. But for one AutoCare network member, those methods just don’t go far enough.
Instead, Chris Rose of Motcombe Garage in Shaftesbury, Dorset, is hitting the long road. The very long road, as it happens. Chris and his daughter Emily-Jane will leave Shaftesbury on 28 March and, with a bit of luck and a good mechanic’s nous, will wind up in M’Hamid, a small village in southern Morocco, around six days later.
How hot will it get? Well, put it this way. M’Hamid is pretty much the last outpost of civilisation before you hit the endless arid dunes of the Sahara desert.
The trip would represent something of an endurance test in a brand new car. But Chris likes a challenge, and to make life a little trickier the test rules insist that participants purchase the vehicle they will travel in out of their own money and for less than £700. Chris and Emily-Jane will journey night and day in a Land Rover Discovery TDI 300, a fine machine to be sure but by no means a new one.
“I think the Land Rover will make it,” says Chris, optimistically. “It should be easy to fix because it’s high off the ground and I hope we won’t get stuck! The other two cars (making the trip) are both Mercedes – my niece Sally will be in one - so that might test me.”
In fact, Chris is covering the entire expense of the trip out of his own pocket so that every penny of the money raised can go to his two chosen charities, Cancer Research UK and Maggie’s Cancer Centres.
Both are close to his heart. Chris lost his sister Olive to the disease and his wife Steph lost her father to cancer when she was just 17. “It has really made me want to raise money for these charities, and there’s a lot more people I know who’ve got it or have had it. It’s a very, very good cause,” says Chris.
Fundraising began last summer and the team are well on the way to reaching their £10,000 target. But the more they can raise, the better.
AutoCare are proud to support Chris’ team with vehicle graphics and a wheel cover, and anybody who would like to support the effort and contribute to beating cancer can donate by clicking the link below.
