A spectacular Premier League revival was witnessed last Thursday at Liverpool Echo Arena, when Grand Prix champion, ROBERT THORNTON threw the Betway Premier League elimination battle off course.
He’s enjoyed being back in the Premier League this year as he tells Approved Garages: “It’s great to be back. I was taken out of it the last time, but I think I needed the time off. I had a bad year, the year before with a couple of deaths in the family which knocked me back a bit, so I needed the time off to spend with my family.”
The night in Liverpool was most certainly Thornton’s night to shine. Not only did Thornton defeat Michael Smith in the first round of the night, but he later drew with Michael van Gerwen too.
Prior to this, the Scot was looking at an early exit from the Premier league during the eliminations on Thursday 31st, as he entered the night on just one point on the league table; but he turned this around after his 7-5 win against Smith and his draw against the World number one, van Gerwen, he left Liverpool with three extra points.
Thornton told Approved Garages: “It’s a big push against him (van Gerwen). He’s World number one, there’s not many tournaments he hasn’t won. You’ve got to be at your best to play him.”
But when we asked him who he thinks will win the Premier League this year, he said: “I’m probably the least likely one to win the Premier League. All I can do is go up there and give my 100% and hope the fans enjoy it.”
