Top Technician has crowned Kent-based mechanic Karl Weaver as its 2017 winner, marking him as the Top Technician in the UK automotive industry.
Celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2017, Top Technician saw one of the closest-run finals in its history, with Karl, of AutoCare’s Bull Lane Garage in Boughton under Blean, near Faversham, taking the title, by showing superior diagnostic prowess and fault-finding skills on a range of cars.
Nearly 1,000 technicians entered the competition and went through three online tests to whittle the number down. The 1000 technicians had to take the preliminary online test, with that number brought down to ten for a practical semi-final and five for the final.
The semi-finals took place on July 13th at the RMI training academy in Southam. It consisted of 5x 50 minute tasks, 3 of which were practical tests. In this final, the contestants were asked to show their skills on detecting and fixing multiple faults placed deliberately on vehicles by a team of industry professionals.
The results were announced at the Aftermarket Magazine's Top Tech Live 2017 at the Henry Ford Training Academy in Daventry. This is a trade event packed with technical seminars that attracts garage owners and technicians from all over the country.
Karl said, "I felt truly honoured to have made it to the finals and thought I may just have a chance at runner-up but to my sheer amazement I was announced as the winner. I was called up on stage and awarded a trophy and a selection of prizes from the magazine and the sponsors, including one of the latest pieces of diagnostic equipment. It took several days to sink in. The whole thing was a fantastic experience that I'll never forget. The other finalists are great guys who have become good friends and I feel privileged to have competed with them. The only downside is you are not allowed to re-enter the competition.
“The good news has spread fast and I've been overwhelmed by the messages of congratulations from our customers. We have recently given the workshop a make-over and what with the new equipment it is an exciting time for the business".
